The first horse races in Slovenia took place as early as 1874 in the vicinity of Ljutomer. A year later, a racing association was founded in Ljutomer, the first on Slovenian soil and the second in Europe. Trotting club Ljutomer organizes eight races a year at the hippodrome in Ljutomer.
